Public Notice
The Village of Amanda has seen a numerous amount of residential water line breaks this year. We want residents to be conscious of the possibility of leaks and look out for water pressure drops or wet spots in the yard.
The village water system went into operation in the year 1953, which is when most landowners connected into the municipal lines. This makes most residential lines 70 years old and depending on what each landowner installed back then the lines could be deteriorating. Galvanized pipes have been the main culprit.
We have discovered about 8 residential line breaks in this first 6 months of this 2023, and we have had to call in leak locaters 3 times because the leaks never surfaced. As you know, the residential lines that run from the tap into the residence is the responsibility of the homeowner. So, discovering the leaks rapidly can help you avoid costly expenses.
We do recommend, residents and their contractors they hire to repair the lines, replacing the complete line to avoid more breaks and additional cost. EPA and the village have guidelines on the type of piping and fittings that is required.
In addition, the Epa has mandated anyone repairing lines need to install a backflow preventer and expansion tank which can be purchased from the village at cost. An inspection of the connections will have to done prior to the lines being covered.
Call the village municipal building if you suspect a leak, at 740-969-4771, reminder that all contractors need to be registered with the village, contractor registration packets can be found on our website.
